Sri Thanonchai was a very clever man. When the king heard about him, he thought, "Surely this man cannot be cleverer than I am."

The king decided to visit Sri Thanonchai so he put on old clothes and called for his elephant. He rode to Sri Thanonchai's house near the river. Sri Thanonchai was sitting on the step outside his house repairing his bicycle.

"That's a nice elephant you have, mister." Sri Thanonchai called out.

"Why, thank you." said the king. "In fact, it's a palace elephant. I am one of the king's ministers and I'm almost as clever as the king himself."

"Oh, no one is as clever as the king," replied Sri Thanonchai

"Some people say you are, so I have come to test you." the king continued. "I don't suppose that you're clever enough to make me jump into the river."

Sri Thanonchai thought about this. He scratched his head. "No," he said. "I'm not that clever. I can't make you jump into the river."

"Then I win," said the king, proud of himself.

Sri Thanonchai then said, "Of course I am no clever enough to make you jump into the river but it would be even more difficult to make you climb out. Only a very clever man could make you do that."

Hearing this, the king jumped into the river. "Are you clever enough to make me climb out?" he shouted.

Sri Thanonchai laughed. "I have made you jump into the river. Surely you are clever enough to climb out."

Admitting defeat, the king swam to the river bank and climbed out of the water. "Sri Thanonchai, you are indeed the cleverest man in the kingdom." said the king.

Section I

Read the passage below and answer questions 1 to 6. Your answer must be based on the passage.

When you curl up to go to sleep, you are just getting comfortable. When a hedgehog curls up to go to sleep, it does so for protection.

Hedgehogs have stiff and sharp spines everywhere except on their faces, legs and bellies. By curling into tight balls and tucking in their heads, tails and legs, hedgehogs protect the parts of their bodies that do not have spines.

When hedgehogs are born, their spines are soft and short. So, they have to stay in the nest until their spines are longer and stiff, too. Then, The young hedgehogs can safely follow their mother outside the nest as she looks for food.

Tops on the hegehog's menu are insects, followed by small mice, snails, lizards, frogs, eggs and even snakes. When a hedgehod goes after a snake, its spines act as a shield against the snake's bites. A hedgehod sometimes adds extra protection to its spines. Immune to some poisonous plants, a hedgehog sometimes eats them and then makes frothy saliva in its mouth. It then licks its spines, spreading the saliva with the plant's poison all over the spines.

Though hedgehods mainly stay on the ground, they swim quite well and even climb trees. If one is up in a tree and wants to get down quickly or falls, its spines come in handy once again. When the hedgehog hits the ground, its spines help it to bounce, thus making it unhurt.
