Continual Assessment 2 (#3): Section J

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Answer in complete sentences.

Every night when Ruki reaches home, the first thing he does is turn on the water pump in his backyard. With no access to clean water, he relies on it for his family's water needs.

Ruki's night routine allows the murky water to sit for a few hours to let the mud settle to the bottom of the water tank. The well water is so contaminated that his family uses it only to wash their clothes and clean the house. They can only afford to buy clean water for consumption and bathing.

Ruki is not alone. An estimated 700 million people in Asia do not have access to safe drinking water. There is a shortage of safe drinking water due to an increasing population, pollution and poorly constructed buildings.

Our environment is also affected, especially in areas where more people are using the same small supply of water. For example, stretches of the Yellow River in China are nearly dry. This is because more and more people depend on it for their water supply.

Most of the countries that lack water depend on the rain that seasonal monsoons bring to replenish their reservoirs and rivers. Since a lot of the annual rain falls only for a few months of the year, overuse during the rest of the year creates problems.
